SCULPT YOUR TOY

This week, we were asked to sculpt our toy. Check for scale, form, posture, color.

I developed my whale design from what I made last week. I want to go for something clean and simple and I also like the color black. So I think I will try to make a killer whale toy.

I had different posture for the whale in mind and I tried to sketch them all out.

I like the top right one the most so I started from that one.

I used aluminum foil to build the structure of the whale, then covered it with air dry clay.

I found it pretty challenging to sculpture my whale in to the exact posture and character that I had in mind, although my whale design looks very simple but I think it's hard to sculpt it how I actually want it to be. It wasn't hard to sculpt the whale into the posture that I want, but it took me a lot of time to get it's personality right (I'm still not sure if I'm satisfied with what I have right now)

I had to wait for the clay to dry and then I drew the pattern on the clay and used black poster color to paint it. From this experiment, I think I want to add some details to the white ovals that look like its eyes. I will have to find a way to make the pattern symmetrical. I was planning to use masking tape to mask out the white area but I forgot.
